The Chinese Kuan Yin is the same Boddhisattva of Infinite Compassion as the Indian Avalokiteshvara. In China and Japan Kuan Yin is usually not clearly gendered, or, in later art, clearly female. In India and other Buddhist countries Avalokiteshvara is usually male!
